  3. This is the README.TXT file distributed with Almanac for
  4. Windows 3.0.  Topics discussed in this file are:

  13. REGISTRATION
  14. ------------
  15. Almanac is not free software.  It is released as
  16. shareware, which provides the opportunity for the
  17. program to be evaluated before it is purchased.
  18.  
  19. We hope that after you try Almanac you will like
  20. it so much that you will want to register.  By
  21. doing so you are voting with your pocketbook for
  22. us to continue developing high-quality, Windows
  23. shareware.

  25. Complete information on how to register Almanac
  26. is included in the REGISTER.TXT file.

  29. COMPATIBILITY
  30. -------------
  31. If you are running a version of Almanac earlier than
  32. 3.0, please be advised that the format of the desktop
  33. data files has been changed.  Notes and appointments
  34. entered in Almanac 1.0 through 1.04 (*.ALD files)
  35. will require translation to the new data base format.
  36. Refer to the XLATEALD.TXT file for instructions on
  37. how to convert these data files using XLATEALD.EXE.
  38.  
  39. Overlays created with earlier versions of Almanac
  40. (*.ALO files) are 100% compatible with Almanac 3.0.
  41. The wedding anniversary gifts are now optional.
  42. You may edit any wedding anniversary definitions
  43. created with pre-3.0 versions and and check the
  44. Wedding check box to display this information.

  48. UPDATING A PREVIOUS ALMANAC INSTALLATION
  49. ----------------------------------------
  50. If you are updating a 3.0 Almanac installation, you may
  51. want to de-select one or more of the installation
  52. options.  The following table explains what files will
  53. be copied to your hard disk for each option:
  54.  
  55.     Program Files:  Copies the executable program file
  56.                     and supporting modules.  This option
  57.                     should be selected when installing
  58.                     or upgrading your Almanac program.
  59.  
  60.  Default Calendar:  Copies the DEFAULT.ALC calendar file
  61.                     used by Almanac on start-up.  Also
  62.                     copies the ALMLOCN.DAT file that
  63.                     contains location and time zone
  64.                     information for various cities.
  65.  
  66.   Sample Overlays:  Copies the sample overlays files
  67.                     included with the Almanac release.
  68.  
  69. Online Help Files:  Copies online help files that can be
  70.                     accessed from Almanac's Help menu.
  71.                     This option should be selected when
  72.                     installing or upgrading your Almanac
  73.                     program.

  76. INSTALLING ALMANAC 3.0
  77. ----------------------
  78. The Almanac package includes a graphical Windows
  79. installation program using the standard name of SETUP.EXE.
  80. You should place all of the files included in the release
  81. package on a floppy disk or in a temporary directory of
  82. your hard drive.
  83.  
  84. SETUP requires about 600K bytes to complete the
  85. installation of Almanac.  Once installed, the Almanac
  86. files will occupy approximately 400K.
  87.  
  88. Run SETUP by selecting the 'Run...' command from the
  89. File menu of Program Manager or File Manager.
  90.  
  91. Enter "d:\SETUP" as the Command Line, where "d" is the
  92. drive/directory that you are installing Almanac FROM
  93. (for example, A:\SETUP).  Select "OK".
  94.  
  95. 1. The first action performed by SETUP is to display the
  96.    date your computer is set to.  Almanac's calendar
  97.    will not operate correctly if your computer is not set
  98.    to the correct date.
  99.  
  100. 2. SETUP will prompt for the target directory you would like
  101.    to install Almanac to on your hard disk.  Accept the
  102.    default or enter a directory of your choice.
  103.  
  104. 3. SETUP will then display a dialog of the components that
  105.    can be installed.  You should leave all of the boxes
  106.    checked if this is a first time installation.
  107.  
  108. 4. If you are using Program Manager as your Windows shell,
  109.    SETUP will allow a Program Manager group to be selected
  110.    to receive the startup icon for Almanac.
  111.  
  112. SETUP will inform you when installation is complete, and
  113. direct you to the WHATSNEW.TXT and REGISTER.TXT files.
  114.  
  115. IF SETUP REPORTS PROBLEMS UPDATING COMMDLG:
  116.  
  117.   1) Exit Windows and restart Windows to insure a clean
  118.      system.
  119.  
  120.   2) Hold down the SHIFT key while Windows is initial-
  121.      izing.  This will prevent Windows from launching
  122.      any other applications after Program Manager.
  123.  
  124.   3) Do NOT use the Browse function to start SETUP.
  125.      Doing so will invoke the COMMDLG module and
  126.      prevent SETUP from completing the installation.

  137.  SOFTWARE LICENSE
  138.  
  139.  Non-licensed users are granted a limited license to use Almanac
  140.  on a 30-day trial basis for the purpose of determining
  141.  whether Almanac is suitable for their needs.  The use
  142.  of Almanac, except for the initial 30-day trial,
  143.  requires registration.  The use of unlicensed copies of Almanac,
  144.  outside of the initial 30-day trial, by any person,
  145.  business, corporation, government agency or any other entity is
  146.  strictly prohibited.
  147.  
  148.  A single user license permits a user to use Almanac
  149.  only on a single computer.  Licensed users may use the
  150.  program on different computers, but may not use the program
  151.  on more than one computer at the same time.
  152.  
  153.  No one may modify or patch the Almanac executable files
  154.  in any way, including but not limited to decompiling,
  155.  disassembling, or otherwise reverse engineering the program.
  156.  
  157.  A limited license is granted to copy and distribute Almanac
  158.  only for the trial use of others, subject to the above
  159.  limitations, and also the following:
  160.  
  161.   1)    Almanac and all of its release files must be copied
  162.         in unmodified form, complete with the file containing
  163.         this license information.
  164.  
  165.   2)    Almanac may not be distributed in conjunction with
  166.         any other product without a specific license to do so
  167.         from Impact Software.
  168.  
  169.   3)    No fee, charge, or other compensation may be requested or
  170.         accepted, except as authorized below:
  171.  
  172.         A) Operators of electronic bulletin board systems (sysops)
  173.            may make Almanac available for downloading only as
  174.            long as the above conditions are met.  An overall or
  175.            time-dependent charge for the use of the bulletin board
  176.            system is permitted as long as there is not a specific
  177.            charge for the download of Almanac.
  178.  
  179.         B) Vendors of user-supported or shareware software approved by
  180.            the ASP may distribute Almanac, subject to the
  181.            above conditions, without specific permission.  Non-
  182.            approved vendors may distribute Almanac only after
  183.            obtaining written permission from Impact Software.
  184.            Such permission is usually granted.  Please write for
  185.            details (enclose your catalog).

  187.         C) Non-profit user groups may distribute copies of the
  188.            Almanac diskette to their members, subject to
  189.            the above conditions, without specific permission.
  190.            Non-profit groups may collect a disk duplication fee
  191.            not to exceed five dollars.
  192.  
  193.   LIMITED WARRANTY
  194.  
  195.   Impact Software warrants that all disks provided are
  196.   free from defects in material and workmanship, assuming
  197.   normal use, for a period of 90 days from the date of
  198.   purchase.
  199.  
  200.   Impact Software warrants that the program will perform
  201.   in substantial compliance with the documentation supplied
  202.   with the software product.  If a significant defect in
  203.   the product is found, the Purchaser may return the
  204.   product for a refund.  In no event will such a refund
  205.   exceed the purchase price of the product.
  206.  
  207.   EXCEPT AS PROVIDED ABOVE, IMPACT SOFTWARE DISCLAIMS ALL
  208.   WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT
  209.   LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND
  210.   FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, WITH RESPECT TO THE
  211.   PRODUCT.  SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE DEFECTIVE, THE
  212.   PURCHASER ASSUMES THE RISK OF PAYING THE ENTIRE COST OF
  213.   ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR, OR CORRECTION AND ANY
  214.   INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.  IN NO EVENT WILL
  215.   IMPACT SOFTWARE BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER
  216.   (INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF
  217.   BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF BUSINESS
  218.   INFORMATION AND THE LIKE) ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR THE
  219.   INABILITY TO USE THIS PRODUCT EVEN IF IMPACT SOFTWARE
  220.   HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

  222.   Use of this product for any period of time constitutes
  223.   your acceptance of this agreement and subjects you to its
  224.   contents.

  226.   U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS

  228.   Use, duplication, or disclosure by the Government is subject
  229.   to restrictions as set forth in subdivision (b)(3)(ii) of
